Turbo Download Manager 8.02

So Fast it Blows

I remember coming across the notion of download acceleration back in the early noughties (2000-2005). That time was, for me, an age when you could make and enjoy a cup of tea while the newest wallpaper from digitalblasphemy.com would slowly fill up the display of the cathode ray monitor, line by line. Wasn't Dial-Up just great? But then when line connection and fiber optics came along, waiting times were virtually abolished (at least in my part of the world). Even though Turbo Download Manager is an Android app, I'd still feel there's no need for such a thing.

Turbo Download Manager

Be that as it may, Turbo Download Manager (TDM) claims to bring some features that you might be missing with your standard mobile web browser. As advertised, TDM springs into action whenever you begin downloading a file, either from your favorite web browser or the TDM's internal browser. What's so great, allegedly, is that you may now pause, resume, and queue up multiple downloads. You could use this feature as a download reminder for when you switch the connection from mobile to WiFi, for those of us who don't pay for an unlimited data plan.

Turbo Download Manager

It all sounds great in theory, but in practice, Turbo Download Manager is a missed opportunity, and then a worse missed opportunity. I've been trying it out on two devices. On the first one, it utterly failed to work, showing me a blank screen whenever it had to start a download. On the second configuration, however, I did manage to download things, but even if I could choose the number of said "threads" and saw the download bar loading up from multiple positions simultaneously, the download speeds still did not impress me. To be more exact, they took at least twice as long as on Opera Mini. On top of that, there was no way for TDM to download unless the link was opened from its internal browser.

Finally, I could see use in Turbo Download Manager's queue function, but I rarely if ever keep a download backlog.

Features

  • Multiple threaded downloading
  • Built-in browser
  • Download queue
  • Custom download location per file

Final Thoughts

Performancewise, Turbo Download Manager is a hit and miss. Depending on your device or on your connection, download speed can vary wildly. It also doesn't beat Opera. You can experience some annoying technical problems on older devices. Overall, not impressed.
